Zappware signs contract with regional TV stations to deliver iDTV services
16/01/2009

Four regional TV stations go interactive with DirectAccess™ and Digital Teletext

Zappware, the Belgian one-stop solution provider for interactive Digital TV (iDTV) on multiple TV platforms, were tapped by four Flemish regional TV stations, namely atv, TV Oost, TV Limburg and TV Brussel , to deliver DirectAccess™ and Digital Teletext based on their off-the-shelf iFormats. These services will be available on the digital TV platform of cable operator Telenet.

Zappware's iFormats are built in a modular way for easy rebranding, customization, and deployment on various TV platforms through Zappware's proprietor iView Platform, which is a flexible, platform-independent production environment. Thanks to the iView technology the client can update and schedule content himself in-house.

Zappware's iFormat for DirectAccess™ consists of a pop-up menu which is displayed 'in overlay' on the TV screen as soon as the red button is pressed. Meanwhile the viewer continues to view the running programme full screen. The pop-up menu contains highlights allowing direct access to their respective services. This iFormat allows the broadcaster to push certain content whether it is broadcaster content, sponsored or advertising content: a specific page from the broadcaster's Digital teletext, a Broadcaster Quiz (BC Quiz), a TV site, an interactive Advertisement (iAds) or catalogue (iCatalogue), the Telenet Video-On-Demand (VOD) environment,...

Zappware's iFormat for Digital Teletext provides enhanced benefits for viewers with full-colour pages, nice images, easy-to-read fonts, faster, easier navigation and more control. The viewer continues to view TV programmes/commercials in a scaled-down window whilst scrolling through content or participating in (sponsored) quizzes, polls or direct marketing campaigns. The Digital Teletext iFormat interfaces seemlessly with external content providers so that existing information may be re-used with a minimum of human intervention. It also integrates iVOD (one video item or a list of video items) which is then viewed full screen.

Marc Vervoort, iDTV Producer at Zappware: "Our deal with four regional TV stations proves that In the fast evolving digital era of today broadcasters are mainly interested in solid iDTV solutions that have a proven record, that are fast to deploy, and that generate new revenues."

Frank Bell, General Manager atv: "At atv we are strong believers in the possibilities of digital teletext. Not only for text-driven services (more than 30% of our viewers use teletext to get programme information) but also for commercial services. The possibility to add pictures and video and not only text creates almost unlimited opportunities for advertisers. The reason why we selected Zappware is obvious. Their applications have been proven to be technically solid. On top of their technical expertise they succeed in empathizing with the broadcaster, the advertiser and the viewer."

Paul Israël (directeur media partnerships) at Telenet adds: "We are very happy that the regional TV stations go fully interactive with new applications behind the red button and the digital teletext. From now on interactive digital TV at the regional TV stations is a fact and it proves that it is actually the interactive componant of digital television which is key in the platform's success."
