Zappware launches social networking features for its "iView Core" services suite at IBC09
07/09/2009
New iDTV services allow for social networking on TV
Zappware, the Belgian one-stop solution provider for interactive Digital TV (iDTV) on multiple TV platforms, is exhibiting at IBC, RAI Amsterdam, from 11 till 15 September 2009. At IBC09 Zappware will launch the extension of its "iView Core" services suite with social networking capabilities. Visitors are invited to drop by at Zappware's booth 4.B51 for a demo showing how the add-on allows the viewer to connect with friends and family to:
- see what they are watching on their TVs
- exchange favourite lists of TV programmes and VOD movies
- recommend TV programmes or VOD movies to one another
- send VOD movie gifts to their friends
- lock their TV screens onto one another and watch the same content
TV has always been a social experience by its nature: one often watches TV together with family or friends. Another social aspect of TV is that people are always talking about what they will see/have seen on the TV screen. Social networking is about creating a profile, linking it to other profiles within a social network, with the aim of staying in contact and share experiences. There is no better medium than the TV itself to share TV viewing experiences.
The social networking features described above are extensions to Zappware's iView Core services suite. iView Core (previously dubbed "iView for Operators") contains services such as Video-On-Demand (VOD), Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), and hard-disk or network-based Personal Video Recording (PVR). These services are targeted to cable, IPTV, satellite, terrestrial or broadband operators in order to enrich the media experience of viewers and generate new revenues. Operators that include social networking features in their offering, have a competitive edge when trying to attract new customers. Also, customer loyalty will increase as customers will be more engaged with the operator's service offering, and this is likely to result in more revenues for the operator.
Koen Swings, CTO & Managing Partner Zappware: "Social networking has been a buzz word in the past few years, in particular on the internet. With these extensions to our EPG, VOD and PVR products, we now extend social networking from the PC domain to the TV domain, because we are convinced that there is no better environment for sharing TV experiences than the TV itself. In a world, in which people are continuously seeking to connect and in which consumers are willing to embrace new technologies that allow them to connect better and more often, these social networking features on TV will be highly appreciated by viewers. Operators that include these features in their iDTV offering, will be able to offer their subscribers a cross-platform social networking experience, hence adding value to their triple or quadruple play offer and resulting in increased subscriber loyalty."
